Jadav Molai Payeng - “The Forest Man”
This man walks to the desert everyday but no one has the clue what he is hiding in his bag.

This is the story about Majuli Island. This was once a flourishing oasis for Indian wildlife but as people started to cut trees, the land went barren.

Jadav Payeng grew up on Majuli Island and saw the transformation with his own eyes.
In 1979, he decided to do something about it.
He walked to a spot in the barren landscape and planted a tree. This became his daily routine for the next 38 years.

The result is incredible. His forest is now almost twice the size of central park. And with the return of the vegetation came the animals. A herd of 115 elephants now live in this forest alongside tigers and rhinos.
Thanks to Jadav, 1359 acres of sandbars are now a flourishing forest.
Majuli island is now a true tropical paradise.

Please share Jadav’s story if you believe that every small act can make a huge difference.
In 2015 he was honored by Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
