To that, I may add that if you have an inclination towarads a career in law, you may appear in the CLAT entrance test held for 5 year LL.B. (H) course which is held all over India. LL.B. is either a 5 year course after 10+2 or a 3 year course after 3 years' graduation. Doing the 5 year course therefore saves one year, if you ultimately wish to go for a career in law.

After doing LL.B., you may go for litigation/law practice where you have your own clients (individuals or organizations/corporates) in your private practice. In the alternative, you can enter litigation by joining a law firm. After some years of practice, you may, if you prefer, attempt to be appointed as a standing Counsel for the Government or Prosecutor for the State. Or you may join a corporate as an in-house counsel. In-house counsels don't generally appear in Courts but rather advice the management on legal issues and coordinate with the lawyers who actually appear on behalf of the courporate in a Court. You may also appear for entrance examination for appointment as a Judge of the Trial Courts. Subject to vacancies, you may, immediately after LL.B., attempt for a 'junior' ranking Judge in the hierarchy or a 'higher' ranking judge after 7 years of practice. You can go for Masters in Law (LL.M.) and Ph.D. in law, if you wish to go for academics and teaching.

My personal experience has been, private practice is the toughest for a beginner, lack of clientele being the biggest hindrance. Practising as an associate in a law firm (and eventually, a partner) is good and pays decently, though this too is a bit tough in the beginning and getting a foot in the door may be tricky. Otherwise, I've found litigation, both as private practice or with a law firm as the most exciting, challenging and thrilling. Though, the hours and workload maybe extremely demanding, leaving little time for personal life (at least in the intial stages). The earning will obviously rise from decent to good as you rise in ranks in a law firm and it'd need perseverance. I found being in-house Counsel as most dull and boring, but the pay is good and the workload relaxed, compared to litigation/practice. Teaching in Universities pays very well these days, with 6th and 7th Central Pay Commission being applied by the Universities. And teaching leaves a lot of time for a person's further academic and research pursuits.

Oh, and I forgot that glamour factor in being a litigation lawyer
