A new SARS-like virus has killed a third person, spread around China and reached a third Asian country, authorities said Monday, fuelling fears of a major outbreak as millions begin travelling for the Lunar New Year in humanity's biggest migration.

The new coronavirus strain, first discovered in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, has caused alarm because of its connection to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

Wuhan has 11 million inhabitants and serves as a major transport hub, including during the annual Lunar New Year holiday which begins later this week and sees hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel across the country to visit family.

A third person was confirmed to have died and 136 new cases were found over the weekend in Wuhan, the local health commission said, taking the total number of people to have been diagnosed with the virus in China to 201.

IMHO, the anti-vaxxers are complicit.
Another good reason to proactively defend one's borders.

Is there any antiviral drug or vaccine for this? Will pneumococcal vaccines be helpful? Or influenza vaccine?

I checked online but couldn't find any articles explaining about exact treatment for this. All I got to know that People are still being tested by experts/doctors.

And now they're trying to quarantine a city of 11 million. Somehow I don't think that's gonna work.

Agree, I don't think it will work. Moreover this virus is spreading to at-least 3-4 more countries in Asia also.

The virus will start mutating into newer genes as soon as it passes from person to person. there needs to be at least 3 -4 different types of drugs to control this.
Last time when Ebola broke out in Africa it was antibiotics which came to the rescue.
I hope China does the quarantine part efficiently and gives out adequate and proper information for the world-wide medical communty to work with.

Though the virus is spreading which is scary. The only silver lining is that the genetic sequence is known n vaccine is likely to be developed in weeks.

They made it, they'll have the vaccine ready but the major problem is containment of the spread.

Is the lock down still in force in China. I heard that parts of the country lifted it with some restrictions. If it is still in place then perhaps this new virus can be better contained than COVID-19.
