Secret Seven by Enid Blyton! Oh how I longed for my friends and I to go on a similar adventure. How cool that would have been.

It's difficult to recall the first book that got me interested, but I'm guessing that I started off reading Tinkle first, then moved on to other magazines before picking up Enid Blyton books... probably Noddy and later other series. By the way, I hate Secret Seven because Peter is such an annoying prig! The Five Findouters are much more fun. Love the Faraway Tree series - I think that was Blyton's very best stuff.

I started with Asterix and Obelix comics, moved on to Amar Chitra Katha etc.. etc.. and was hooked on to books for life.

Everyone seems to have been through Enid Blyton. Somehow, I did not pick that up. For me it was Perry Mason, followed by some James Hadley Chase books and then Agatha Christie and later Alistair MacLean...

That's really surprising, because I'm assuming that the children section in libraries, especially until the 90's, were dominated by Enid Blyton, illustrated classics, Russian story books (Raduga Publishers) and Roald Dahl. In fact apart from these books and magazines, I didn't read anything else up till my teens. Maybe my local libraries missed out collecting books of other writers. Even the popular ones like Lemony Snicket and Rick Riordan books I read, I discovered them only as an adult.

My earliest book memory is Young Children's Encyclopedia. Being read out by my parents, before I could start reading on my own. I moved to Enid Blytons too with Famous Five (we had a DD series too, right?), Five Find Outers, along with Tinkles, Asterix, and Tintins.

@mousetrap: I agree. For those of us who grew up in the pre-liberalisation era, the children section in libraries were dominated by Enid Blytons, and bridged versions of classics appropriate for kids.
