How to Cultivate Reading Habit in Children
Books have a way of igniting a person’s imagination like nothing else can. And no one quite has as active an imagination as a child does. This is why it is important that the two be introduced to each other.

1. If your child is young then a good way to introduce him/her to reading is via illustrated books with plenty of pictures, graphics and colours. Don’t want to scare them away for good with a tougher read than they can handle!

2. A great way to get your child to read is to read with him/her. Remember, you must not read to children but with them. It gives you the opportunity to rectify mistakes your child makes during reading.

3. Every now and then ask your children what they liked and/or hated about the previous book they read. This way your child will be encouraged to have and express his/her opinion and know that it matters.

4. Simple and easy reads are best when you want to ease your child into the reading habit.

5. Try and figure out what it is that your child likes reading. This way you will not force a genre upon him/her that he/she doesn’t like. This is critical towards inculcating a reading habit.

7. Gift your children books on occasions instead of video games; this should get them going.

8. Kids, by nature, are a bit restless and fidgety. By making books easily available to them you can cash in on this trait and make it harder for them to resist the urge to turn a page.

9. Make it a point to make a trip to the library with your child often. Not only is the atmosphere so conducive to reading but just seeing so many books and the fact that you needn’t buy them to read them will light up your child’s eyes.

10. Be the kind of parent that encourages all types of reading, right from newspapers and comics to magazines and content on packaging even.

My dad was a voracious reader, he used to tell me a  lot of stories at bedtime (mostly historical & Indian epics) and when I could read he would gave me a steady supply of Amar chitra katha and Tinkle, I guess that got me hooked and there was no looking back after that.

Children should be allowed to read books preference by them like story books. In between , we may persuade them to read some good lightly written books also. Slowly slowly this may inculcate reading habits.

Even i started my reading journey from Amar Chitra Katha. These books were most instrumental in creating an interest in reading due to beautiful pictures.
