I have read multiple mytho-fiction books and though they seem very riveting and interesting, I felt cheated and annoyed at certain places (blame it on my devotion to Classic Mythology)
Distorting facts for the sake of creative liberty and to earn a few brownie points seems disgusting to me. Here are a few of them:
1) Aryavarta Chronicles: Govinda : The author has nicely explained the political buildup by Govinda to defeat Jarasandha. However there are too many distortions to the classic literature e.g.
Rukmini is abducted by Pradyumna (I was aghast at this). Rukmini is the avatar of Shri Lakshmi and She has to be with Shri Krishna. Pradyumna was their son.
Also, Yudhishthira is shown to be a very gullible and cowardly character.
Much of Mahabharata is reduced to a secret war between Firewrights and Firstborns.
2) Shiva Trilogy by Amish :
In the first book, Shiva is hailed to be their savior when he becomes Neelkanth, whereas in the last book it is shown to be planned in advance, which the readers feel cheated.
Again, distortions here are in the form of Ganesha and Kali, who is shown to be a Naga, ie, deformed person. No mention of Parvati.
3) Scion of Ikshvaku : Felt like this totally insulted the Ramayana with unnecessary addition of characters like Roshni and plots like Rama was the most hated son.
In Shiva trilogy, atleast the story telling was better.
Didnt feel like reading Sita ie the next book in the series
4) Mahabharata secret and Mahabharata Key : The Vimana Parva, and the scientific explanation of Samdura Manthan seems a bit over the top.
5) Asura and Ajaya : Author plays devils advocate, justifying the negative characters.
The ones that I liked are :
1) Vikramaditya Veergatha by Shatrujeet Nath
2) Vishwamitra and Legend of Parshuram by Vineet Aggarwal
3) Books by Devdutt Pattanaik : Sita, Jaya, Shikhandi, Pregnant King, 7 secrets series etc. |
