Those who liked the Krishna Udayshankar version of Ashwathama should also read the series Aryawarta ...
I read the last part of Arayavarta trilogy (only one, because it was a giveaway copy). I was surprised, how each and every 'magical' event was described in a scientific way. Nowhere 'unbelievable' magic and 'chamatkar'. Logic prevails in this series. Fabulous !
Love Christopher C Doyle and Ashwin Sanghi....Mythological fantasy in the context of science and present times. Definitely need more in this genre in my opinion...

I personally hated Ashwin Sanghi's Chanakya's Chant. The reason is that this book like many others of the mythological/historical fiction genre in India often glorify our past a bit too much. they don't understand that the past wasn't glorious for everyone. The dalits have perfectly valid reasons to criticise our past and others also have much to be embarrased about in our past.
I understand that this is fiction but I appreciate at least some form of acknowledgement of the social ills of the time and Chanakya's chant was especially awful in this regard. Also the modern politics were a bit too simplistic for my tastes.

That probably was the USP of that entire series. Nothing was shielded behind the divine lens. Everything had an almost scientific explanation to itself. This is where Udayshankar scores over so many other authors who tried their hand at reimagining Mahabharat. Though I still wish she had explained the complexities of the 'astras' a little more. Wherever she failed she cleverly shoved it under "but it was a Firewright weapon afterall".
What modern day intellectuals fail to grasp is that 'dalits' are of recent origin. The atrocities and pain they went through is of a very recent origin. We had 'Varnas' which was assigned on merit and not at birth. Yes it got corrupted and things followed but again that is not how it originally began. So to dump all the blame on our history and characters out of it isn't done. These days the environment is so perverted that everything is patriarchal or misogynistic and racial and what not. There is no scope for an jonesh open discussion. Add to it, Brahmin bashing or history bashing earns them readers/viewers so it prevails over better understanding.

Well I'm not advocating bashing anyone.....Although I'd like to know your sources for the fact that the discrimination is only of recent origin and would be happy to engage in an honest discussion without prejudging the validity of anyone's opinions.
Edit: Maybe we should create a separate thread for a discussion on this and other related socio-political topics??
The problem in this day and age is that research means to look up on Google and be done with it. Because of which there are handful of writers who are good in every sense of the word. Sources are ushusua skipped for a more controversial alternative.
About your edit, let me discuss it with Cynic and get back to you at that. Because our club is growing, it is a little difficult to open everything at once. Let me just get back at this one in a while.
