It's a good idea, as such. Encourages posting of quality content and indicating others to make an informed guess about the worth of a Post.

However, in most Forums I've been too, I've seen Karma being abused systematically between Members forming coteries (a respectful way to put, gangs!). Also seen it leading to lot of bickering.And people with inflated Karma through abuse, acting as someone who's privileged and with a special right to voice opinions above others.

If you've got to do it,you've got to do it. But it'll take a lot of time, resources and effort on part of the Mods to regulate it.

Unfortunately i have to agree.
I've been on few forums where this has worked - the formation of macho alpha groups after a while seems to be almost inevitable and very unpleasant - -they can make the experience almost unbearable and have lead to the demise of the forum after a while
just my thoughts - mods have to be VERY strict from the beginning ....
