Yes, audiobooks are a bit slow.
But I tried a different approach.
I was reading 1984 and it took me so long to concentrate as I was reading it during my daily commute to office in staff bus where speakers are blaring bollywood songs.
I downloaded audiobook of the same and in-ear headphones helped me to concentrate.
For slow - I did a trick. I played in VLC player for mobile phone. And increased play speed.
Voila ! I finished the book in couple of days !!!

It depends a lot of the quality of narration. I switch to audiobooks on a few occasions when I want to give the book another shot before quitting it.

Talking about narration, yes. I was reading Gone Girl, and it was taking too long to sink my teeth in.
I switched to audiobook while actually reading the book too. It was fun, with expressions and all by both the narrator.

That is an interesting way to look at it. Our grannies were indeed a treasure trove of stories.

Yes, they were our audio-books of sorts. BUT we could interrupt them and ask questions, clear doub ...

absolutely correct. we could imagine the charaters, the situations, corroborate that with them and that is the biggest missing link in audiobooks

i do not mind audio books if they have a good voice.
nasal voice turns me off.i prefer reading mostly but
when eyes gets tired but i wish to keep my mind engaged still
i rely on good audio books with nice loud clear pronounced voice.

I think reading books is better than audio books and reading a book is more engaging than listening it.
