I take the 50 books a year challenge on goodreads, i usually hit that target easily, and it's more for myself to keep track of my books than the challenge itself. 30/30 would only work for me if i'd include graphic novels

What about the challenges that push you to explore new genres? Such as the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge and Popsugar Challenge.

What are your thoughts on that?

We do something very similar: a book bingo in our library. In this you get a Bingo form with fields that state things like: "with a blue cover", "A book with less than 200 pages" or "set in scandinavia" etcetera. Readers try to form a "bingo" by crossing off reading goals. Although i really do like these initiatives, i prefer to be led to new genres by my friends/fellow readers than purely by chance.

I might try but I don't think I would like to read a genre that I have no interest in. Exploring for the sake of exploring and wasting my time when I have long list of books I have short-listed and which I think I might like is not what I would like to do. The thread on blurbs-cover-author comes to mind. I would check out the cover and the blurb(since the author would be toatlly new to me if I tried a different genre) and decide if I wish to try. Then I might delve into it, but if it failed to hold my interest after the first 20-25 pages, I would dump it. So, what I mean is, I would not push myself to explore other genres just for the sake of it.

Like I tried Amish Tripathi. His first "Immortals of Meluha" I think it was. I literally forced myself to finish the book and that was it. Never picked his other books. Because that kind did not hold my interest!

I agree, bingo with "with a blue cover", "A book with less than 200 pages" or "set in scandinavia" are pretty random. You never know what book you end up with.

I quite liked Immortals of Meluha but was put off by the way the trilogy ended. Kingdoms perished and innocents were wiped out due to one man's hunger for revenge. And with practically no justification. Haven't picked the Ramachandra series yet. Maybe some day.

Like you said, too many books, too little time.

Why do we need to read 30 books in 30 days, I can read at least 15 in a month though but it depends. but I read for pleasure not to compete with anyone

I agree with quite a few of the posts above. I would like to read for enjoyment  and would hold on to a book no matter how many pages provided i like it. not fond of targets. then i would end up focusing on the target rather than reflect on what i am reading

Why should I do binge reading.... What happened to the good old reading for pleasure. Do these people dont read some passages they liked over again just for the joy of it.
I never knew there are these kind of challenges. I have been keeping a list of books I have been reading over last two years and was thinking I am weird. I guess I am not.....
Whats the point of running through the book.........Pls spare us that thought
