The adoption is the imagination of the director of the book.
That may not exactly match my imagination. And my imagination is the best imagination there can be, atleast for me. So reading the book is the best option.
I have voted "no" simply because, no amount of expansive production can match human imagination. But I'm very thankful for TV adaptation of Song of Ice and Fire, I found the books to be too long in contrast the TV series is crisp and compact. But TV adaptations do get people to read books(I started reading song of ice and fire because of GOT) so that's a good thing as well.
In general I would say "no", there is no chance to put one own's imagination into a movie. But as limteh explained there are actually a few examples where it was sucessful. Having said that the majority unfortunately fails.

Reading books give you a different perspective as read & understood by you best on your own intellect & experience wherein TV adaption or film is similar presentation as per it's screenplay writer & director understanding & they may not be the best one. If you want to know the content if a book simply than TV or film are best means no brain application.
No way can A tv adaptation match A book. When A book is adapted into A movie. There are certain adaptation required both in form of dialoges and characters which may or may not match the book. The theme or idea maybe same but gross deviations in potraying can be noted. Also it may not match with our imaginations.
