Absolutely relevant topic. Creating the habit of Reading in children, for that matter even adults is extremely important. Some things which I did with my kid.

Started with just big font books, then moved to amar chitra katha comics, the enid blyton, Hardy boys, etc.

It is important that at least in the initial few years, pick up books which are clean and free from abusive languages, slang words, swear words etc.

Authors like enid blyton, Anthony buckeridge, etc. are very relevant.

As they come into teens, it is ok and probably needed also to vary the inputs and they should be able to pick and read any kind of book, though i still prefer them not to read extremely violent or adult oriented stuff till they are in the late teens..

The thing is, they should enjoy the reading and should not consider spending few hours quietly sitting and reading a difficult and boring chore... Once you have managed to set this behaviour,  the skill is set for life... At any point of time, they can re-activate it and read... just my 2 cents...

Nurturing and encouraging are both required. But the interest to tell and read stories needs  to be there from a really young age. My mother made sure I read atleast 15-30 minutes before going to bed when I was a school kid. And somehow it is a habit that has stuck with even today.

There is no "right" age...  Start as early as you want.. no harm. Toddlers can have a whale of fun, with books of nice attractive pictures. Of course, make sure that the book's ink/paper are child safe as there is a high chance they will put stuff in their mouths at this age.

I started with giving books to my kid when he was 8 - 9 months old.. not that i expected him to read / understand, but they will get used to seeing the colours / feeling the book etc..

For smaller children, it is always good to start with illustrated picture books. For slightly older ones before junior school, chapter books help develop intuitiveness, creativity and subjectivity. When they reach their teenage years, adventure books help with innovative thinking, ambitiousness and confidence.

Making sure children read starts with reading books for them in the early days. Being able to recreate the story in her or his own fantasy is one of the important steps for really enjoying books. That's also why I prefer to read a book before the movie or TV series, there is so much more in it compared to just looking at someone else's translation.

reading material is not the problem, the attitude about reading is the problem in children.
we should entice them to read books by telling them stories and information.
