Guide to Extracting Kindle Ebooks and Converting to Epub
To extract and convert Kindle Ebooks, you'd need Kindle for PC, Calibre and DeDRM Plugin for Calibre.

Kindle for PC is required for downloading and saving your Kindle ebooks to PC. In the latest version of Kindle for PC, v. 1.23.50133 (in fact version 1.19 upwards) books are downloaded in KFX format which is not very conducive to conversion. Though, a KFX conversion plugin has been introduced to Calibre, it is not always successful in converting KFX. it is therefore advisable to download an older version of Kindle for PC, preferably v.1.17. This can be downloaded from https://filehippo.com/download_kindle_for_pc/69970 .

Download and install Kindle for PC. At the welcome screen on first run, Register Kindle with your Amazon ID and password. It is important that you prevent Kindle for PC from auto-updating since, left to itself, it'll update to the latest version which will download books in KFX format which cannot be easily converted to other formats. Therefore, after you have registered Kindle for PC, go to Tools > Options > General and uncheck 'Automatically install updates when they are avilable without asking me'.

The 'Library' section of Kindle for PC will display all your purchased Kindle ebooks. Right click on the book you wish to download and click on 'Download'. The book will be saved on your PC at the default location, Documents > My Kindle Content (full path C:/Users/[User Account Name]/Documents/My Kindle Content). The books will not be saved by name of the book but with their ASIN number (Amazon Standard Identification Number).

Calibre is required for converting Kindle books to many other formats including Epub, PDF and Mobi. Download Calibre from its official website, https://calibre-ebook.com . Download DeDRM plugin from https://apprenticealf.wordpress. ... ools-6-6-1-released and install it following the instructions at https://apprenticealf.wordpress. ... ving-most-ebook-drm or in the Readme file that comes with the plugin. Once you've installed Calibre and DeDRM plugin, use 'Add books' in Calibre to add the Kindle ebook from Documents > My Kindle Content. If DeDRM plugin is properly installed, the DRM will be removed automatically when the book is added. Once the books is added, use 'Convert books' in Calibre. It is advisable to first convert the book to Epub format before converting it to any other format like Mobi because conversion to Epub removes your unique identification from the ebook.

Bingo! The converted Epub would be saved in Documents> Calibre Library.

Please note that simply copying Kindle ebook from the Kindle reader device to the PC will not work for conversion. This is because, for opening and converting the Kindle ebook, Calibre requires a unique registration associated with the ebook, the user account and the Kindle reader device (on the Kindle reader, this infoormation is displayed in Menu > Settings > Device Info > Serial Number). When you install Kindle for PC and register it on PC, this registration information is automatically read by Calibre but not if you simply copy the ebook from Kindle reader device to PC via USB.
