[General] Quantity over Quality

You might have caught Amish Tripathi's discussion with Sonali Bendre on Facebook. Among other things, the author announced that he would be releasing a book every six months, apart from the myth-fic series he is famous for. Amish is known to release a book every few years. Isn't it better to polish one book, than churning them out in quick succession?

Being from a creative field myself, I know that quantity does affect the quality. We have authors churning out books every few months. The quality is a different matter altogether.

Is it all about the money and/or staying relevant, or does creative satisfaction matter? What is your take on this?

Truth be said, I am not happy with Amish's decision of pulling out a book every six months. When you have a certain deadline to meet, you tend to skip on a lot of things .The end result is always a rushed and haphazardly put together finished product. Quantity does affect quality. It's no brainer. When you have to divide your attention on multiple things there is no way in hell the integrity of that thing can every be intact.

Could be the case. From what my friends told me, the Ramchandra series is not at par with the Shiva Trilogy. Clearly shows Amish wants to bank on his success faster and a lot more.

Ditto. One book every two years does not convert to as much returns as 4 books within the same timeframe. The man has already made a name. People will buy (and read) his books either way.

@Shivani, I haven't read the Ramchandra series yet. Hate to wait two years for the next book in the series to come out. I too have heard it does not match the Shiva trilogy.

This means that the writer is getting very goal oriented-which is to write any book within the deadline. obviously, he/she will cease to focus on creative aspects and will keep churning out books which readers may not welcome

Unfortunately most new readers follow what we call the "bhed chaal". With the author's name stamp on it, and if the book is marketed well, people will still read it.

Perhaps you are right. But we must remember -just as there are writers who wish to produce anything, there are readers who would lay their hands on anything. So a writer chasing a number target would reach this kind of audience but a well informed and choosy reader would have second thoughts on going anywhere near such books.

That is true. There are all kinds of readers. Reading the comments on the discussion and people raving about how they would not have to wait for years to read his books just goes to show that the audience is ready to go. They are probably the same ones who leave 5 star ratings on Amazon and Goodreads before the book is out.
