That image reminded me of those circular patterns in crops, supposedly attributed to extraterrestrials.

Yes, although I am a little skeptical about it, however, there are certainly images and designs that can be inexplicable ... For example,  the Nazca lines in Peru, how they could be done, when to do them, it was required to have a aerial view of the terrain?

It can also be a coincidence.
People in past might just made them for timepass with out knowing how it would look from top.
In present we think why they are of certain shape when it can be anything (even the certain shape) and try to find an explanation.
Afterall we can see faces in buildings, clouds etc.

I am not totally debunking the ufo theories. There is always a possibility of them being real. But currently there is not much evidence to back it.

Actually, everything has a rational explanation, and when we are not able to find it, then the best explanation is the divine or mystic, or the alien, or even the conspiration... Sometimes we need irrational explanations to be able to support our systems of beliefs.
Humans are us basically more likely to believe than to think. That is, we tend to go the easy way... Certainly, some more than others.

It is not difficult to prove that believing is easier than thinking. A look at the statistics can quickly confirm my afirmation.
The vast majority believe in something, and throughout the history of mankind, many of those beliefs have led many people to kill other people, because of the most implausible and ridiculous beliefs, and that continues to happen today. Definitely not only believe is easier than think, but also, the majority considered as dangerous to think.
Think frees man, and a free man is seen as a danger and a threat by those who believe, the story is there, it is not difficult to verify my afirmation. From the inquisition to the Nazis, from the witch hunt to the religious fundamentalism, from obscurantism to the censorship of books.
