A challenge I have in casting my vote is some of these authors I really enjoyed their early works. But perhaps for a variety of reasons (success, getting older, money) their recent works are written by others or are a collaboration with another author, and it just doesn't seem the same.
Frederick forsyth, Robert ludlum and tom clancy. The only reason that ken follet isnt here is because though some of his books like eye if the needle and key to. Rebecca are awesome, his later books are not really up to the mark

I had the same feeling. Some of Follett's books are very well written but his last Pillars of the Earth series didn't go well with me. I read only the first part and didn't bother with the other parts. But his Eye of the Needle & Key to Rebecca were excellent. I even liked his The Century Trilogy.
I am so torn between Robert Ludlum, Ken Follett and Dan Brown. I agree some of their works weren't up to the mark but these are stalwarts in their own space for sure.

Read every book by Robert Ludlum(and a few with co-authors Gayle Lynds and Eric van Lustbader). Also read all of Dan Brown. I remember I used to wait for his books and buy them as soon as they were available. But then he is getting too predictable and falling into the cookie cutter trap. Ken Follet - read a few, not all.
