I have a habit of starting with book but leaving it midway & starting a new one, Internet gives so many information that i find it hard to concentrate on anything. Is it related to Internet addiction? It has affected my professional life also. I think they all are interconnected.

Sometimes you just need to go offline for a while. Try it, make a pact that you won't go online, visit any website, mail or social media and take a week off from these activities .

Keep your mobile on but the internet off. Believe me by the end of the week you will feel like a New person. And oh, you will be able to complete the books you read too

Multitasking is an addictive bad habit since it releases dopamine, the reward system for the brain. It gives us the dangerous “feeling” that we have achieved a lot, a perpetual dangerous feedback loop with a reward. Switching between tasks makes the prefrontal cortex and striatum to burn up a lot of energy. This very energy is vital to focus our attention on tasks at hand. Multitasking also releases the stress hormone cortisol. There is some correlation between multitasking and decreased density of anterior cingulate cortex, an important region of the brain that governs higher-level functions like empathy and emotional control and decision making. Because of all this, less work gets done when we are multitasking. In effect, multitasking is making us addicted and dumb and the long-term effects are harmful.

In contrast, there is some tenuous evidence that during deeply focused work more myelin is produced. Myelin is the protective sheath that covers the axon of the neuron and is responsible for the faster propagation of impulses along the neuron. Myelin makes the brain work faster and better. This can be a double benefit – focus and deep work is not only good quality productive work but has this amazing benefit like doing your reps in the gym for the brain.

its called the Information Overload fatigue syndrome

In “Information Overload: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions,” an article for the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Learning Innovations Laboratory (LILA), Joseph Ruff says that we are bombarded with so much data that we’re on information overload. Simply put, information overload is when our ability to process information has passed its limit, and further attempts to process information or make accurate decisions from the surplus of information leads to information overload.

Ruff argues that information overload interferes with our ability to learn and engage in creative problem-solving. For instance, venture capitalists with too much information cannot make accurate adjustments to their evaluation process, and because of this their learning is impeded.

The best way I have found is to return to books in print or use a dedicated e-reader such as a kindle / kobo for reading books.

Most of the multitaskers read books on their phones which is nothing but an invitation to time wasting as attention spans are quite low these days.

I love the smell and feel of books and make it a point to buy paperbacks or hardbacks on book sales / festivals on online discount sites. This way the problems with attention spans diversion are minimized.

I would advise finding the book you want to read not what people say you should read. Once you have the right material as per your taste you won't be able to put it down.
