More often than not we pick up book in hopes that it would entertain us. But sometimes luck doesn't favor and we end up paying for a book that tortures us to some other level. For me that book has to be Minnette Walter's The Devil's Feather. I just wasn't able to find any cohesion in her thoughts while jotting down that book. I get that it was a psychological thriller and stuff but I couldn't drag myself to read it after a certain while.

Have you ever encountered something like that?

Back then, our library had shelves full of Ron Hubbard's books. One day, I picked one out of whim - I think it was called 'Invader's Plan' - a science fiction. This genre is usually fun, but the book I picked was like a curse... I remember reading the first few pages again and again not understanding what was happening and not having any motivation to continue. Needless to mention, I've never picked that author's book ever after that.

It happened with Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' as well. If the size of the book was a major discouragement, the writing itself was getting on my nerves. Boring, and I don't know why some of my friends kept recommending her books.

I've faced frustration with quite a few classics too. I found 'Far From the Madding Crowd', 'Kenilworth' and 'War and Peace' incredibly tough to enjoy.

There have been quite a few, but the most recent one that tested my patience was Murakami's  Norwegian Wood. It came highly recommended, but I could not go beyond 25%. Was waiting for the story to begin, but apparently that was the story.

I bloody hate it when recommended books turn out to be like that. Minnette Walter always featured in my recommendation and I decided to read it. The first few pages was enough to make me want to pull out my hairs.

I don't understand how does books like these go for publication? Do editors go blind for books like these??

Atlas Shrugged is that bad?? I have heard so many praises for the same. Calling it magnum opus and what not? Hell, it's in my TBR list. Okay I know what to strike off now.

I don't think so. Walter is a bestseller author herself. But I hate her. So I might as well shrug the Atlas.

Nope....

Its a evergreen topic. We'll keep on popping similar questions due to similar state of mind that comes up with certain books. It was not to point out but just to add so that the discussion can continue from where it stopped on that thread. I'll follow this thread and avoid those frustrating books
