From the end of the world to unreliable narrators, trends come and go in the book publishing world. Indian book publishers have stuck to myth fics and celebrity memoirs for a while now.

What's the one trend you'd like to see more of in books? Do share.

I think it would definitely be good to have Desi science fiction... We're definitely lacking in that genre and I wouldn't be surprised if that'll start trending in the coming years.
It'd also be nice to see more meaningful graphic novels... It's still in its nascent stage. Even that's mostly dominated by myth fiction for some reason. At the other end of the spectrum, those by Sarnath Banerjee or Appupen are too obscure to be enjoyable.

And of course, more dystopian world novels would be fun too! I don't think I've read any written and based in India.

I would love to see a good fantasy series. The genre of comedy is also almost absent in India. Would love to see some books in this genre too.

There are other trends that I can see too. If you look closely there is a kind of underbelly to the more popular and sauve writers like Arundhati Roy and Amish and this generally writes about romance or some stories which are very similar in appeal as in about a boy or girl who meet, fell in love get separated or wont get separated. I don't want to demean any such writer or any such story but somehow they all seem too shallow or just another script for a hindi movie (Chetan Bhagat is a classic example).
I dont want to see any trend just some good story be it mytho fiction (stuff other than Ramayana and Mahabharata, they have been used in too much details for their own good) or any story, about war, peace, love, hate, betrayal. We have such rich history and such a vibrant country and I am sure there are enough and more stories which happened in past and which are happening around us.....

I agree. Both the authors and the publishers need to experiment more instead of churning out the same old stuff. Why wait for another Amish Tripathi to popularize a genre?

Ditto. The author seems to have "arrived" if the book is converted to a movie.... be it in India or elsewhere.

@cynic exactly what i think. I feel that there are many books which would never be converted into a movie for they would never be able to do justice to the scale and characters as the author has done, but still they are and would always be great read

This is a great thread. I'd love to see more graphic novels appealing to different age groups, as well as sci-fi. Revisionist and counterfactual fiction would be welcome. More work (in diverse genres)is needed for middle grade kids and YA.
