I think books have a disparate audience and so to rate a book as good or otherwise is rather tough. having said that any good book should hold your interest till the end-for whatever reasons- so why not have parameters to decide overall good or bad

Exactly. Sites like Goodreads need to improve their rating system to include criteria such as plot, characterization, writing style (building up on what jhsurti said). Currently it is consolidated subjective opinion.
I usually don't give a low rating unless the book was so bad that I couldn't finish it. For me I give it a 5 stars if I absolutely enjoyed the experience and 4-3 stars if it was a drag.
How do you judge the book....
I avoid romance books and will straight away give them a single star for just being romantic.
I could not really comprehend Ayn Rand except maybe in Anthem and We the living and would say Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged to be boring.. People dont stop raving about them though ( I have a genuine doubt how many have really finished them)
