WhatsApp is bringing several new features to its app via updates. Lately, the company launched the live location sharing feature, the ability to Delete for Everyone, and more. In the meantime, there is a shocking news for you.
Well, a fake version of WhatsApp was found on the Google Play Store. The app has been lurking around with the name Update WhatsApp Messenger and the developer's name is WhastsApp Inc. At the time of writing this content, the app has been downloaded 6477 times. There is another version with the same name with over million downloads.
The existence of this malicious app was first noticed by WABetaInfo via a tip from the Twitter user @MujtabaMHaq, claims an IANS report. According to the report, a version of the Temple Run 2 game was also found on the Play Store and it is said to be uploaded in October. The software that poses to be the WhatsApp Business app has also been noticed and several users are complaining about it in the review section.
Given that WhatsApp has over 1 billion users, these malicious apps might create a lot of trouble for the users both existing and new. There are many warning regarding these fake apps. The WABetaInfo's Twitter handle has already tweeted warning users, "DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS APP! IT'S FAKE! WhatsApp Business is not officially available yet for all." Also, the tweet added that "Check only official channels to download WhatsApp Business in future." Notably, WhatsApp Business is awaiting its rollout as a standalone app.
If you don't remember, this is not the first time that fake apps related to WhatsApp are making round on the Play Store. A couple of years back, a fake app with a name similar to WhatsApp with many new and different features than the original app was talked about a lot and many people downloaded the same.
