The Gypsies have a mysterious origin, as they appear to havecome from India, but some scholars say no. They would have come from theancient Chaldean region, in the territory where Iraq is today. It iscertain, however, that nine hundred years ago they began to arrive in Europefollowing the path of the Balkans, passing through Bulgaria. Today theyare spread across the various countries of the European continent and alsoaround the world. They are almost invisible, they wander the streets ofbig cities, women in their long dresses approach tourists and offer the readingand the revelation of the future. Marginalized and targets of strongprejudices, they seek subsistence in whatever way possible, not always byabsolutely legal means. Gypsies, also called in different regions of theworld, romi, bohemians, gypsies, romnichals, calons, calés or calós . Theterm gypsy is considered by some of them to be an insult. Its populationin Europe is estimated at 11 million people, which represents a higher numberthan the population of Portugal or twice the inhabitants of Norway, forexample. They represent the largest group among existing minorities. The history of the gypsies is a saga of violence, flight andpersecution. The European Union, in its fundamentals, did not recognizeits existence, let alone its rights. He left them out of the welfarestate, without jobs, health, education and freedom of movement.
