It happened after Swami Vivekananda returned from Chicago, delivering the historic speech at World Parliament of Religions. By then everyone in the country knew about him and his great speech in the Western world on Hinduism, the religion that has taught tolerance and universal acceptance. Vivekananda was wandering near Himalayas and he came across a river. Waiting to cross the river he saw a boat that had just left the bank. So he sat by the shore to wait for the boat to come back. In the meantime, a Sadhu arrived there. He saw Swami sitting there and he asked him why he was waiting there. Swami replied that he was waiting for the boat to take him across the river. The Sadhu quizzed Swami, ‘what is your name?’. Swami replied with lot of humility, ‘I am Vivekananda’ Sadhu replied in a mocking tone, ‘Oh…!! So you are that famous Vivekananda, who thinks that just by speaking in foreign country, he can become a great sage?’ Swami did not say anything. He just smiled at him. Then Sadhu demonstrated his power by walking few meters on the river and then asked Swami, ‘Can you cross the river like I did?’ Swami showing respect to that Sadhu replied with extreme humbleness, ‘indeed it is a great power. But can you tell me how much time did it take you to gain such a great power?’ Sadhu felt very good and proud by Swami’s praise and replied, ‘it was not easy. I did twenty years of extreme Sadhana to get this power’. Seeing his brimming face, Swami replied, ‘You wasted 20 years to learn something that a boat would help me do in 5 minutes. You could have devoted these 20 years serving the destitute. You wasted 20 years to save 5 minutes, it is not wisdom”. Sadhu was left speechless.
