"Qantas or the Queensland and Northern Territories Aerial Service had humble beginnings as a joy flight and air taxi service in Queensland's Outback and at times it seems like every second town in the outback has claims to being the birthplace of Australia's major airline.

The idea to establish the airline came about when two former flying corps airmen, Hudson Fysh and Paul McGuinness, travelled through outback Queensland to prepare the route for the famous London to Melbourne Air Race. Together they saw the potential for an air service to link the remote outback centres, and with the financial backing of local pastoralists, they established an airline.

The fledgling company was registered a business at Winton on 16th November 1920 and the first official meeting was held at the Winton Club."

My sentiments exactly.

It was an enterprising move and so early after the first successful flight in 1903 by the Wright brothers; a mere seventeen years earlier.

The transformation from a single aircraft that would fly a short distance to a commercial airliner that would travel across the country is a rare example of innovation and daring.
