Fraud A new tactic

I wish to share with members a clever attempt at fraud using mail rather than the SMS mobile phone route.I received by mail a letter purportedly from one of the leading e tailer companies stating that as along standing customer of theirs I was selected to participate in a lucky draw of Rs 1 lakh.A scratch card was also attached and I was to convey the code hidden in it to a mobile number ostensibly for verification.On scratching the card I found a message that I have won ten lakhs and the code printed should be sent by SMS to the mobile number to claim the prize money.I was to desist from contacting the customer care of the company because the prize was being offered by a separate division of the company.However I brought this to the notice of the company but decided to probe the matter further by sending the code to the mobile number on the card.Within minutes of sending the SMS I received a call and a lady speaking broken English confirmed that I had indeed won the prize of one lakh rupees and should provide my bank details and await further instructions.I declined and told her to send me the amount by crossed cheque since the address was already with her.She broke the connection and that was the end.Meantime the company has replied that the whole thing was a scam and that they would take action at their end.How is that?
