▼ The Indian Intellectual Property Council of India(IPAB) recognized Peru's exclusive rights to the Pisco designation of origin after more than nine years of disputes.
According to the National Institute for Defense of Competition and Intellectual Protection (Indecopi) andMinistry of Foreign Affairson November 29, 2018, IPAB declared the appeal of Peru and acknowledged our exclusive right toOrigin of Originregister it to our advantage as aGeographical Indication.
IPAB Judgment
Upon issuing its judgment,IPABwas founded on the historical facts which attest to the unconsciously peruvian origin ofPiscostating, inter alia, that:
Since colonial times, Pisco is the name used to identify a valley, a river, a port, and a city located on the Peruvian coast.
According to the research carried out by lexicographers, chroniclers and historians, the word Pisco has come from the Quechua language and means "bird".
Inappropriate change
Republic of Chileerroneously modified the name of a region in its territory (Pisco Elqui) to suit viewPiscobelonging to Peru, when it had for many years another name (La Unión).
They also emphasized that the management of the defense of Pisco is part of a joint work of various sectors involved for this purpose, such as the State Department and Indecopi.
