The Ig Nobel Prize returns for its 28th iteration this week, the unusual and amusing achievements in wide-ranging fields of science, academia and culture.

Past winners includeSir Andre Geim, who won in 2000 for levitating a frog in a magnetic field, an idea that was one of the scientist's 'Friday evening experiments'.Another Friday evening experiment, this time with graphene, saw the scientist win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010.

The Ig Nobel Prize is awardedfor the achievement that makes first laugh, and then make them think, reads the official description.They are a pun on the Nobel Prizes.

'The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative - and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology.'
The present ceremony also features Nobel Laureates handing out the the Nobel prizes.

The Ig Nobel Prizes are organized by the scientific magazine, Annals of Improbable Research and is co-sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students and the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association.

Each year have Ig Nobels are awarded in the fields including science, technology, culture, politics and humanities.

The Ig Nobels are also famous for featuring Miss Sweetie Poo, an eight-year-old girl who sits on the stage.If Miss Sweetie Poo thinks the speaker has gone on long enough, she goes up to them and says: 'Please stop.I'm bored.Please stopI'm bored 'until the speaker does so.
When is the Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony 2018?

The Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony 2018will take place onThursday, September 13at 6pm ET.The awards ceremony will be held at the Sanders Theater, Harvard University.

2018 Ig Nobel Prize nominees

The Ig Nobel Prize ceremony does not reveal the list of nominees, saying that the sheer amount of nominations, around 9,000, is one key reason.

The other reason is cautionary, in case the nominee rejects the award: 'In almost all cases, when we select winners we give them the opportunity to quietly decline the honor.

'If someone says no, we do not award them the prize, and we do not release any information about them or their achievement.Happily, most of the people who are offered an Ig Nobel Prize do decide to accept it, and to attend the ceremony. '
What is this year's theme?

This year's theme is 'the heart'.The organizers note that the subject applies to various goings-on, though not necessarily (and not necessarily) to any of the particular achievements being honored with an Ig Nobel Prize. '
