Most of us at one time or other, have come in contact with this giant behemoth we call government....A sequel to highly praised and successful ;English August, Mammaries of welfare state is all about the welfare state sadly.
Its full of labyrynthine description of welfare state and how it works and leaves very little to imaginagtion. This is where i believe that it has lost its plot. While we all want to hear about August (the protagonist) and his tirades and witty and humourous remarks about things, all we get is a  long and rather boring monologue about various characters and government machinery. I really wish that more space was to be given to August and less to the unnecessary government or welfare state as it is called in the book.

For me the first book still and would always remain the best of two and somewhere it looks like since the author is a civil servant he is using his knowhow of jargon and nitty gritty of internal mechanisation of how things work (or dont) in the government to digress us from the story as he doesn't have any story to tell. I simply skimmed through some pages just to get to the main point

I would give it 3 stars out of 5 just for August and few humourous sentences towards the end....
