This genre has been ubiquitous on Indian bookshelves for the past 5-7 years - from Ashok Banker to Amish Tripathi to Kavita Kane and beyond. Based on my avatar, I'm obviously a fan Would like to use this thread as a place to both discuss the books in this genre that we've liked and not liked, and also to keep track of new releases which can sometimes be hard because it's more of a subgenre of fantasy/historical fiction and not really labeled clearly.
I'll start by mentioning that the best authors I've come across in the category are Vineet Aggarwal and Gautam Chikermane - the latter's Tunnel of Varanavat was the most original mythological fiction I've read so far without completely botching up the source material.

Those who liked the Krishna Udayshankar version of Ashwathama should also read the series Aryawarta by the same author. It is such a wonderful depiction of the Mahabharata. The author has tried to portray all the characters of the epic as real humans capable of follies and emotions. But human.... not gods or fictional characters. Really worth a go.

Welcome to the group

This is a great initiative. We have members here that are into myth fics. And have had some interesting discussions on the Mahabharat as well.

Welcome to our club!

This is a beautiful initiative. Indeed Myth-fic is the hot selling cake at the moment. I for one am really impressed with the research and plotting of the story that these writers have shown while penning down their thoughts. In a country like India where there exists a story in every nook and corner; it would be an utter shame if it is not tapped into a novel length re-telling. The new lot of writers have gotten the memo and are creating wonders. I haven't had the chance to read the mentioned authors. But I have read Krishna Udayshankar, Vineet Bajpay and Kavita Kane. And I have enjoyed it nonetheless.

Thanks for chiming in, guys, and thanks for the recommendation @vikpan1133! I had been considering that one and was waiting to hear from someone on how it was. Like Tunnel of Varanavat, I found it intriguing that this one is focused on a single event, it really shows an author's talent to weave a story out of something that takes up barely a few verses in the original texts!

It's Krishna Udayshankar.

Thanks Shivani . The synopsis has me intrigued. In a weird way, it reminds me of Cain from the Lucifer series... before his true colors were revealed.
