More often than not, the story is about the protagonist. Their dilemmas, their struggles, their rising above the call of duty. While it's nice to read about the protagonist, what about the other half of the story. No hero would be a hero unless there is lurking evil to test their heroism. Hence the antagonist. The pretty bad dude whom we all love. Yes admit it. You like a villain more than the hero for most parts.

So here is a thread dedicated to them .Throw in your fictional favourites from the villainy. Mine would be Iago from Othello and Amy Dunne from Gone Girl.

Professor Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes. He sends a chill down my spine but is intelligent and keen observer and manipulator of human psychology.

Count Olaf in the Lemony Snicket series. He won my heart by his sheer persistence, extreme creativity and the amount of villainy he is capable of! What an awesome fellow he is, that he often overshadows the protagonists in every book.

Iago would be my pick too. I like villains who are intelligent. He understands human nature, knows how to exploit and manipulate.

Prof. Moriarty was the first name that came to me when I read the question. A worthy opponent!

And of course Amy Dunne of Gone Girl. Sheer brilliance of Gillian Flynn creating Amy!

The most chilling one has to be Hannibal Lecter

Yes him too. And I just recalled Cersei of House Lannister from the Game of Thrones. One really loves to hate her.

Cersei in disturbingly sinister. In fact, most of the villians in the book/series are.

True, but quite a few of them die, some have a change of heart. But Cersei is persistently present and sinister in all seasons!
