We all love reading books, and I believe we all have a say as to what makes a perfect recipe for a good book. So what according to you makes a good book?

For me as long as the writer is focused on the main narrative, doesn't deviate from it and allows their characters to progress realistically.....it is a good book. What about you?

Definition of good book varies from person to person. But as per me simple writing, not deviating too much from theme and honest view makes a good book

I would say it's the plot of the book and also how the author makes sure that he doesn't divert from ...

Totally agree on that. Some books read as random journal entries.

Too much of philosophy or numbers put me off. Rest all is good.

Shivani, I agree. Most books start of well, and lose the plot somewhere in the middle. For me, a good book is one that retains my interest from start to finish.

As for non-fictions, they should not read as Wikipedia articles. That is plain boring.

That probably is the worst thing. Most of the writers these days, I believe, write just for the heck of it. In turn the good writers who have a good plot and story and sharp narrative are lost. Like after Tripathi's myth-fic debit there was a boom of writers trying their hands at the genre. While some really had their wonderful addition most of the works were simply put, crap at its finest.

Everyone who is anyone is writing a book these days, and most of them don't really understand how to write a book. They are just all over the place. Sometimes it make you wonder... how the hell did this get past the publisher?!

And certain folks are in dire need of services of an editor. What baffles me more is do they even read their own work?

I enjoy a book which make me think.. mostly thrillers, historical or biographies which are well written. I enjoyed reading Van Gogh Biography by Irving Stone. I also enjoyed reading Dan Brown books

Same here, Shalsilk. Books, particularly fictions, have a lot to do with how the reader interprets the characters.

Agreed. I don't like preachy books. I don't what the writer to tell me how must I interpret their character. I want that decision to be left entirely on me. Interpretation of a character of their circumstances should be entirely on the reader.

That is the reason most movie adaptations are disappointing. When reading a book, you visualize a certain image of the characters. The way they are interpreted in the movie depends on the screenplay writer, director and actor. And it may not match what your version.
