UP man gives triple talaq to wife for returning home 10 minutes late

AGRA: Weeks after the bill criminalising triple talaq was passed in the Lok Sabha, a 23-year-old woman in Alipur village of Etah district was allegedly given triple talaq by her husband over the phone for returning home 10 minutes later than the 30 minutes deadline given to her.

The couple, Afroz Hussain and Simbul Begum, who got married one and a half years ago, hail from the same village. According to Simbul, her grandmother’s condition was serious and she went to see her at her house, which is just 200 meters away from her husband’s home. She said, she was not allowed to visit her parents’s home, but she promised her husband to come back within 30 minutes, if allowed to visit her aunt.

“Unfortunately, it took 40 minutes and my husband, Afroz Hussain, who lives in Hyderabad called my brother-in-law and asked him to put me on the phone,” said the woman, adding that he uttered “talaq” thrice and the phone slipped from her hand.

The woman told TOI that his mother immediately picked up the phone and he confirmed to her that he had given talaq to “her daughter”. The victim alleged that her in-laws would often beat her as her family could not meet their dowry demands. “I also had an abortion because they assaulted me when I was six-month pregnant,” she said, adding that if she does not get justice, she will commit suicide.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of IPC against Afroz, his mother Samina Begum, and brother-in-law Ishrat Hussain on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim at Naya Gao police station.

Etah SSP, Ashish Tewari told TOI that the police will conduct a through investigation into the matter. He said, since the victim’s husband lives in Hyderabad, a team has been formed to go there for his questioning.

Enacting tough laws can not by itself transform attitudes of traditional societies that believe in the sanction of religion for such practices.Unfortunately even the move to afford protection to women through legislation is mired in politics and has become controversial.It is time for the women's groups to rally round the victims and also organise a massive campaign to educate the women at risk and spread awareness in the entire community.
