This was a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging book involving six lively characters: Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper and Wylan and a 'Mission Impossible' style quest. I found the first chapter frustrating because not many things made sense and I was also wondering if I should have read the author's other books to be more familiar with the world. I will not pretend that I got excellent clarity by the time I finished the book, but things get really better after the first 2 chapters and by the time you're halfway in, it's unputdownable.

Interesingly, while I couldn't visualize the settings very well, the characters have been fleshed out so expertly, that it was almost as good as hanging around with the gang. Seriously, the writing, pacing, character development and action are all fantastic. You are bound to fall in love with at least one character - for me it was Nina!

The story flows really well but as it happens sometimes with certain books, not all their escapades are convincing. For instance, the way they tackle different hurdles once they reach the Ice Court is not always believable and that is probably the only thing about this book that didn't work for me. The climax is unexpected and the story doesn't quite end here... you'll have to continue over to 'Crooked Kingdom'.

Goodreads has hundreds of raving reviews about this book and I'm glad to say that it totally deserves it. I wonder why this series isn't a major sensation like Harry Potter?

Thank you @metac for recommending this book. I'm glad I discovered this author and plan to read more of her books.

I also found this really fun illustration of the gang that I loved and thought I'd share:

I too was into the classics phase a few weeks back

Will check the book on faith in the army. From what I know, the army is a great leveler when it comes to religions.

Did he give a TED talk on this? I saw one very recently, about how soldiers have a common place of worship and other details about their lives, especially in really tough situations like Ladakh. Anyway, I found his book on Amazon. Thanks for the information.
