A recent report highlights the risk to children of certain chemicals used in foods and their wrappings.

In the August edition of the magazine "Pediatrics", official organ of the American Academy of Pediatrics,which groups 67,000 pediatric doctors, a report entitled "Food Additives and Children's Health" is published.We think that this work will be very interesting for parents, especially young children.
The report points out that during the last twenty years it has been known that some of the chemical substances added to processed foods and sausages, as well as their containers and wrappings, are associated with problems of sexual maturation, endocrine alterations and other diseases in children.He also says that in the USAThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the authority to determine what type of substances are contained in processed foods or to determine -in real time- their harmful effects.
- Chemical substances in food-
Currently, processed and ultra-processed products sold in the US are allowed.- in the same way as its packaging and wrapping - contain more than 10,000 chemical substances, one thousand of which are generally recognized as safe (GRAS, for its acronym in English).According to the report, children may be particularly susceptible to the effects of these chemical compounds because they are relatively exposed to higher amounts than adults.In addition, your metabolic detoxification system is in full development and your hormonal maturation process is very vulnerable to being interrupted.
The concern of the American Academy of Pediatrics focuses on six chemical substances, which are detailed below:
1. Bisphenols.They are found in plastic polycarbonate containers for beverages and processed foods.They are also in the plastic coating in the canned (epoxy and polymeric resins).These products are related tochildhood obesity and to an interruption of the hormonal and sexual development of the central nervous system.As of today, some companies use new technology that uses coatings free of these epoxy resins, so it is convenient to read the label of the product well.
2. Phthalates.This is a family of chemicals that are added in the manufacture of plastic to give products greater
flexibility.They are found in the plastic wrappers of food, in plastic pipes and tanks used in food production, and in multiple storage products.Since 2006, the plastic paper manufactured in the USA.It does not contain phthalates.These are knownhormonal disruptors in children, which can affect problems with fertility in the future.They have also been incriminated in the development of obesity and heart damage.It is important that the industry clearly specify whether its products contain this type of component.
3. Perfluorinated compounds.This is another family of chemical substances that due to their surface-active properties (surfactants) have a wide use in the protection of food packaging and paper products.Many paper or cardboard containers that have a kind of plasticized liner contain those substances.These are alsoendocrine disruptors and are associated with obesity, the low birth weight of babies and the decrease in activity of the defense system (immunosuppression).
4. Perchlorates.These are chemical compounds that are sprayed on deposits that are going to be used to store food with static electrical property;that is, they can adhere to the surface of the deposits.They have a very wide distribution,
and it has been proven that almost the entire North American population has some of that substance in their blood.They arevery toxic elements for the thyroid gland, especially in children and adolescents.
5. Artificial dyes.Unlike natural dyes (carmine, annatto, caramel, turmeric, etc.), artificial dyes are chemicals that are used to enhance the color of many foods.According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, artificial colors are related toworsening deficits in attention and hyperactivity in children.
6. Nitrates.They are added to sausages and other types of sausages to enhance their reddish color and give the impression of greater freshness.These dyes are related toproblems in the production of hormones by the thyroid glandand -in certain consumer conditions- may predispose to cancer.
- What to do?-
The following are some practical tips to prevent children from coming into contact with these chemicals.
• Prepare fresh foods with natural ingredients;that is, cook daily, trying to do without the packaged products as much as possible.
• Avoid sausages, especially during pregnancy.
• Do not use plastic containers in the microwave (including the bottle), since the heat can cause the chemicals to seep into the food.If you want to serve food to your children in plastic dishes, consider heating it first in the pot or in glass containers.
• Use glass or stainless steel containers whenever possible.There is no need to use plastic utensils.Stick or aluminum spoons are preferable.
• Avoid canned foods.Use them in emergencies.
• If you still opt for plastic, check the recycling code on the bottom of the container to know the type of plastic it contains.Avoid containers with recycling codes 3 (phthalates), 6 (styrene) and 7 (bisphenols), unless they are labeled as "biologically based" or "green".
• Reduce plastic wrap.Use waxed paper or aluminum foil to wrap a child's sandwich.
